Yelp Metrics: New and Improved

We want you to get the most out of Yelp. With that in mind, we’re introducing a new set of metrics that we think will make Yelp for Business even better. Claim your listing at biz.yelp.com, and you’ll be able to check out these new metrics alongside a suite of free tools to improve your presence on Yelp.

Learn more about your visibility on Yelp
Our new “User Views” graph tracks traffic to your Yelp page, as well as views from mobile devices. In addition, you’ll be able to measure traffic to your business over 30 day, 12 month, and 24 month periods. We’ll also show you how many times your business showed up in Yelp’s organic search results over a rolling 30 day period.

Track how users engage with your business
In the fourth quarter of 2011, we had an average of 66 million monthly unique visitors*, and our mobile app was used on approximately 5.7 million unique devices per month during the same period.

To show you how these people interacted with your business on Yelp, we’ve created a section of the business dashboard called “User Actions”. The interactions tracked in this section include the number of mobile check-ins, calls to your business, directions to your business, photos uploaded, clicks to your website, Yelp bookmarks, and Yelp Deals sold.

*As measured by Google Analytics

Our engineering team used input from the business owner community (including Yelp’s Small Business Advisory Council) to fine tune these new features. Be sure to claim your listing via biz.yelp.com to take advantage of these new in-depth metrics, as well as our suite of free tools to engage potential customers, and respond to reviewers. As always, if you have feedback, feel free to contact us using the drop down menu at www.yelp.com/contact.

Your iPhone Personal Assistant: Now With More Yelp!

This fall, we wrote about Apple’s iPhone 4S launch and one of its most buzz-worthy features: Siri, a voice-activated personal assistant.

At the time, when asking Siri for a great date restaurant in Cleveland or a dry cleaner in Portland, more often than not she’d show you relevant Yelp-rated businesses near you, but when you tapped the listing, it wouldn’t take you straight to Yelp.

Well, last week, Apple launched iOS 5.1 and with it, an updated Siri and Yelp integration on iPhone. Now when searching for a recommendation on local businesses, Siri will return Yelp-reviewed businesses and when you tap the star rating (BOOM!) you are immediately taken to the Yelp business profile page. Oh, the places you’ll go... now that you’ll have faster access to Yelp review highlights, quick tips, hours of operation, address, phone number, photos -- the list goes on.

Irish the Other 364 Days of the Year!

With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner, many people are digging out their one green piece of clothing, dusting off their “kiss me I’m Irish” button and getting ready to cheers with a pint glass full of green beer. In the midst of all of this, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at places in the US that are celebrating their Irish pride year-round.

Below are the top 10 US businesses on Yelp with the most mentions of the word “Irish”:

1 - Brendan's Irish Pub and Restaurant is where Camarillo, CA residents head to grab a pint of Ireland’s best-selling alcoholic drink, Guinness. But don’t fill up on this frothy stout, Brendan’s is also famous for their tasty pub grub!

2 - As legend has it, San Francisco’s Buena Vista Café became famous on November 10, 1952 when the bar owner challenged a patron to recreate the Irish Coffee that was served in Ireland’s Shannon Airport. Some 60 years later, “Irish Coffee” is mentioned in 500 reviews for this four star institution.

3 - Although it’s about 4,150 miles away from Dublin, The Irish Times in Miami, FL has yelpers raving about their Irish fare with a Miami flare - especially the bangers and mash.

4 - There is an art to pouring the perfect pint of Guinness (which should supposedly take exactly 119.53 seconds) and apparently Celtic Crossings in Chicago has perfected it! The authentic Irish hospitality has Chicagoans coming back for more.

5 - The happy hour deals at Robbie Fox's Public House have people in Tempe, AZ doing an Irish jig. This Irish owned and operated bar is the real deal.

6 - Las Vegas is famous for its flashy casinos, high-end shopping and... Irish pubs? McMullan's Irish Pub has become a favorite among locals for the amazing service, yummy food and trivia night.

7 - Irish stew, shepherd's pie and Jameson, oh my! Bostonians love Mr. Dooley's for its diverse menu and authentic Irish vibe.

8 - Pro tip: head into The Irish Oak before a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field for their fish and chips (and Irish nachos... and corned beef sliders... and Guinness float...)

9 - As Chris M. describes, Boston’s The Black Rose, “is a great Irish Pub in a great Irish City!” Erin R. adds, “Being Irish and proud, I may be a bit biased, but I think Black Rose is the best Irish Pub in Boston!”

10 - Not only is this four star neighborhood bar known for their Guinness and pool table, San Francisco’s The Plough & Stars is also renowned for their Celtic music.

Yelp Sweden is Here!

(Don't speak Swedish? No worries, read on below for English text)

Yelp Sweden is here! Nu kör vi!

As well as being the country that brought flat-pack furniture to the masses, Björn Borg underwear to the fashion conscious and ABBA to just about everyone in the world, Sweden is a country with a true entrepreneurial spirit.

We are hoping the nation will appreciate Yelp’s passion for local businesses, particularly as 94 percent of businesses in Sweden have less than 10 employees, making it a country that has that wonderful ‘local’ feel about it. Ranked as one of the top 10 Happiest Places in the World, we hope that the Yelp community can add yet another layer of delight into the lives of the already jovial Swedes as they make the site their own.

Our initial community building efforts in Sweden will concentrate on Stockholm, but yelpers can rate and review the best and the worst businesses from across the country and share what their neighbourhoods have to offer both locals and tourists – even if it is just pointing them towards the best place to indulge in stekt strömming.

With over 1000 restaurants in Stockholm, you are never far from a traditional köttbullar med lingonsylt or varmkorv to fill your belly. Be sure to check out its rating on Yelp and let the rest of the Yelp community know how it went with a review of your own.

As of today people in Sweden can log on to Yelp.se, create their profile, access and use the mobile apps – so Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! your Yelp after Midnight! (oh come on, we had to get at least one ABBA song reference in there!)

Let's Talk About The Review Filter

Business owners often ask, “Why does Yelp have a review filter?” While we’ve highlighted several key reasons on our blog, we thought it would be interesting to turn the tables and ask a few business owners what they think. Check out the video below to hear more.

We understand that the review filter can be confusing and even frustrating. However, it’s been instrumental in keeping Yelp useful. As Julie L. of OC Wine Mart & Tasting Bar says, “If no one can trust Yelp, then it’s not good for business owners either,” meaning that if we hadn’t decided early on to take an aggressive approach to quality control, consumers would likely have a very different view of our site than they do today.

If we’ve learned anything from the local business community over the years, it’s that the best strategy for having a great reputation online is to provide great customer service offline. If you’ve received a negative review, we don’t recommend that you try to “bury” it by asking for more reviews. Instead, combine customer service with a solid review response strategy. For more information, check out the Support Center at biz.yelp.com.
